Mandarin Oranges in Cinnamon Syrup

This refreshing dessert was in Martha this month.  My version adds a little more kick.

serves 6

  • 6 mandarin oranges, peeled and segmented
  • 1 C. water
  • 1 C. sugar
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 star anise pod
  • 5 whole cloves
  • 1 t. ground cinnamon

Place the mandarin segments in a bowl and set aside.  In a saucepan, combine the sugar and water and stir to dissolve.  Add the cinnamon stick, cloves, star anise, and ground cinnamon.  Bring to a boil.  Remove the saucepan from the heat and let it cool for about ten minutes.  Pour the sugar syrup through a strainer and over the mandarin segments.  Cover and chill for at least one hour.  Serve in individual cocktail glasses.
